A Magnificent George II Mahogany Bookcase
After a design by Thomas Chippendale with a pierced swan's neck pediment above a dentil-moulded cornice over a pair of doors with foliate mullions enclosing six adjustable glass shelves, the base with a pair of panelled doors enclosing an adjustable wooden shelf.
The distinctive pierced swan neck cresting, arched astragals and nearly identical fret-carving of this charming bookcase closely follows a Chippendale pattern of 1753 as published in his The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd edn., 1762, pl. XCVIII. The faithful adherence to the published design confirms that it was almost certainly made by a practising tradesman in London who had subscribed to this highly influential pattern book.
